The winds of Montana have slowed a bit here in southwest Virginia, and the weather has actually turned more seasonable for summer—clear skies, 85 degrees, less humidity. Maybe it was the transition from spring to summer on Saturday and the solstice which contributed to the whacky weather.

Nevertheless, we here at HOPE extremely appreciate all the effort, energy, calories and time which went into our sixth annual BWCR. It seems as though the wind added 15 miles to your journey and effort, so I hope the recovery is going well for all who participated. We are grateful that about the worst mishap seems to have been a few broken spokes, a cracked handle stem, a sore neck—I hope Cheryl got back to her chiropractor safe and sound--and general fatigue and minor bonking.

As the rains started falling around 1 pm, with the first century finishers showing up, we identified most finishers but not individual times. We know the first century time was 5:14—congrats to Eric Austin, and the last century finisher was 10:25. In between was everyone else. An impressive amount of the riders completed their first century! We’ll have some thumbnail photos up on our website shortly, and a list of participants. If you would like your own self-recorded time listed, please send us a note and we’ll include it on the website, www.bigwalkercenturyride.com.

We netted just about $6,000, thanks to the 126 intrepid riders, and eight fantastic sponsors—Gatorade, Wythe County Community Hospital, Willis Chiropractic, Bankers Insurance, David Martin Insurance, Southwest Podiatry, Road ID and Eleven West. This is a valuable fundraiser for our organization, in a year when contributions are down due to the economic re-set underway. For more information about HOPE and our housing counseling and affordable housing work, please visit our website at www.wythehope.org.

Rider numbers were up from last year—pre-registrations had doubled to 80, and we hope to keep building on the success of the ride, through positive word of mouth recommendations from you guys. We also value suggestions and feedback, so please don’t be shy about letting us know what might be improved, besides the wind tunnel along Rt. 42, the hail in Ceres, and rain atop Big Walker.

We had a petition mounted at the start site asking for signatures to be presented to the Wythe County Board of Supervisors on June 30 for ‘Share the Road’ cycling signage to be erected on a couple of popular routes here, including along the Trans-Am and up Big Walker Mountain. If you wish to respond and lend your name to this effort, please let me know.

From all indications, we’ll shoot for the third Saturday of June next year, so pencil in your calendars for 6-19-2010—the start of Wytheville’s annual Chautauqua Festival in the Park. Stay tuned to our website for updated information, and may you all have a safe and great cycling and recreational season!

Best,
Andy
