The Big Walker Century Ride (BWCR), which began in 2004, is an annual fundraising bike ride to support the programs and services of Helping Overcome Poverty's Existence, Inc. (HOPE), a not-for-profit organization serving the Virginia counties of Wythe, Bland, Carroll, Grayson and Smyth and the City of Galax. Click here to visit HOPE's website and learn more about what HOPE is doing to improve the lives of people in southwest Virginia.

The BWCR is a recreational ride through the country lanes and scenic byways of southwest Virginia. The ride begins in Wytheville, which is conveniently located at the intersection of Interstates 77 and 81 and about halfway between Roanoke and Bristol on Interstate 81 (map it).

With various routes designed for beginner and avid cyclists, the ride has grown to accommodate nearly 200 cyclists each year. The BWCR routes take advantage of portions of the following designated cycling routes: U.S. Bicycle Route 76 (TransAmerica Trail), Virginia Scenic Byways, Civil War Trail, U.S. National Forest Scenic Byway, Blue Grass Trail, and Heart of Appalachia Bike Route.

Southwest Virginia offers many recreational and historical attractions for participants and their families to enjoy while visiting the area. Hiking, biking and nature activities abound. Click here for links to attractions and other local information.
